I'm not surprised...

Thu Jun 18, 2009, 9:54 PM
Well, there's a smidge of backstory for my journal title, so sit down kiddies, for this is a tale that isn't worth being made into a deviation, yet a tale all the same.

So... my old XP computer, had it for about a year, right? Desktop, it was, which I affectionately called 'the monster' because of the sheer amount of power behind it. You might also be wondering why I'm referring to the monster in the past sense.

Earlier today, my monster 'died' so to speak.

People who talk to me on MSN or Steam will know I've been complaining about the fact my XP has been freezing so much. Freezing, as in that it sorta hangs a bit, rendering me unable to do anything at all, before it gets back to what it's doing. These freezes have been getting progressively worse, first for about 20 seconds, now lasting anywhere from five minutes to a half hour. Exaggeratively I'd say two hours, but what I said before was more accurate.

And these freezes would be a pattern, of sorts. First it starts with a program. Then it sorta seeps onto the desktop so I can't use anything there. Then it gets into the taskbar and GUI which makes it so everything is, literally, stuck. And finally, in the worst case, the screen goes white and my cursor, which is the only movable thing, won't even move.

So, my monster didn't die. But I was thinking "fuck it if I'm gonna wait three hours for this thing to unfreeze", and really, by this point, it probably would be three hours. So I unhooked it and set it in the corner to think about what it's done.

How am I working, you ask? I'm on my Vista laptop, the very same I had before the monster.

"But Kit, what about your old projects?" Well, I managed to salvage some files from the monster, that being chat convo records, Game Maker files, my favorite art pieces, and things I've written (tho a lot of good that does since I saved them in Word 2007 format and my Vista uses 2001).

The monster isn't dead, really, but it may as well be for all the good it'll do now. I just hope my Vista will be a good substitute, or, in the worst case, my main computer.

Thanks for reading.
-Kit

Technically, your computer is giving up.

Ironic...

I had the exact kind of problem with my last PC.
I'm pretty sure it gave up.

But i don't know how to keep it from freezing. I had to get a new PC in the end, (bullshit vista) so I don't think there is any way to avoid it. But, i think it happens to all XPs now. I think it's Microsoft trying to kill all the XPs individually to make us use vista. (lol)

There really isn't any point.
But it's good fun, isn't it?

Well, do you have any idea what's up with it? My recommendation would be that, if you have another desktop computer in the house, crack the monster open, pop the hard drive out and smack it in the other computer and see if it functions. If so, you can replace the computer and use your old hard drive without any loss of data. If it doesn't work, odds are there's nothing wrong with the computer, and you can replace the hard drive...though you'll lose all your data.

Ouch man that sucks... are you going to take the beast to a Dr. to see what can be done, and why it's slowing down a bit... I don't know too much about computers, so I don't know what to tell ya... especially if it's been doing well for so long...
Hope ya get it fixed, and you don't end up loosing too much...

Odd, XP's always get the worst viruses and such. My computer had one untill I had it removed my a good hacker in India. (his accent was cool!)

But nothing worked, nothing opened, my mouse worked though, and something wierd happened... 3 times. My computer was probably possesed, It turned itself on 3 times.
My computer and my moms computer are accross from one another in the same room so when I was watching her do work on her's, I heard a start-up noise, the exact sound the fan and power button click sounds like on a vista computer. We looked and my computer was on... I was pretty freaked out.

So I guess your computer is fine untill it turns itself on. (with the power cable pluged in of course)
